June 1, 2020 is the deadline for all commercial, institutional, and residential buildings in Chicago larger than 50,000 square feet to submit a benchmarking report in accordance with the City of Chicago’s Energy Benchmarking Ordinance.
We understand that this is a difficult time for you and your staff. To alleviate any pressure, our team is here to help you virtually with your benchmarking projects. Our energy consultants will use the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Portfolio Manager tool to track your annual energy usage, create a benchmarking report, and submit the necessary documents to the City of Chicago.
As a reminder, benchmarking data verification is required every three years. This means a qualified in-house or third-party representative with the proper credentials (i.e. Professional Engineer, Registered Architect, or Certified Energy Manager) must review the data before the benchmarking report is submitted. As a part of our services, we can benchmark facilities through Portfolio Manager, verify completed benchmarking data, and submit the finalized report. To find out if your building needs verification this year, locate the covered buildings list on the Chicago Energy Benchmarking website.
Energy benchmarking is a tactic enforced by the City that allows building owners and occupants to gain a better understanding of their building’s energy performance. By analyzing this data annually, the City hopes to encourage building owners to act and identify opportunities to cut energy waste. Doing so improves building efficiency and helps lower the annual greenhouse gas emissions for the City of Chicago.
Please note that a few municipalities outside of Chicago also require annual benchmarking reports. For example, the City of Evanston requires benchmarking data for commercial buildings greater than 20,000 square feet. The deadline for Evanston Energy Benchmarking is June 30, 2020.
